Apophenia Series at Ghostly

 1-25

The new series "Apophenia" is available from ghostly.

"There is a term called apophenia, which means seeing patterns where none exist. I think I may have it. This series was made using patterns, but specifically patterns that are dissected and subsequently reconstructed--it is neither an aperiodic nor an asymmetrical tile. It is not completely chaotic--there are moments where the underlying structure is visible--but overall the pattern would be non repeating in the whole, thus non fractal based.

I've never really set up pieces like this series before and look forward to trying more. I want to see how far I can push the base pattern, forcing the overall piece ever more towards the chaotic."

—Matthew Shlian

Similar to Matthew Shlian's Tessellation Series from 2001, Apophenia is presented in four distinct moments, like snapshots in the process of pattern creation. The overall pattern is first cut scored onto a base sheet by a plotter cutter. Then, each formation in the series is assembled, with every cell structure added one at a time by hand. Each formation is produced in an edition of 25 and numbered for a series total of 100 (e.g. the first edition of Apophenian Formation 3 is numbered 51/100).
